In the 1700s, early colonists used worn-out clothing to make rugs when they could not afford imported floor coverings. These rugs were made from strips of used wool, the most popular fiber for clothing and bedding. The wool was punched into linen or burlap backing in hand drawn designs captured from observations of their environment. Today, if one finds these rugs, they are considered American folk art. A one-day class/program on Tuesday, January 21 will share the history of these rugs and introduce the supplies and techniques to make your own primitive style wool-strip rug. Then, each following Tuesday, participants can come to the History Center from 10:00 – Noon to work together, share ideas and be able to ask the program coordinator for help if needed as she works along with the group. Project ideas can include more than floor rugs such as seat covers, table toppers, rug mugs, bags, or wall hangings. Come enjoy the historical program and if you want to make a rug, join others every Tuesday through January, February and into March.
